Because our nation is facing an all time high in the area of obesity, one can't help but wonder why this is. Is it really dependent on genetics? Or are we just relying too heavily on unhealthy diets of fast food? Our children are displaying the results of our efforts.

Well, I guess in all fairness, it is probably a little bit of all of the above. These days the schools are jumping on board and doing some type of ritualistic weigh in of your children, basically letting them know if they are obese or overweight. My question is why is this right? First off, we dont need anything else to bring down our childrens self esteem, and if you have an overweight child in front of you, is there a purpose in making them feel self conscious?

With our culture and world becoming more overweight, it is natural that it happens to our kids, too. The government seems to want to take action about this, but their methods are just weird. Labeling packages can be a good start, not being aware that a can of pop is not just one serving, but two or three is not something most people, let alone children realize. Or it may be a good idea not to offer the largest sized packages as the best deal.

From experience, I have a family of four and we all eat basically the same things, same activities. The kids are skinny, and eat more than any of us. My husband has no activity level, eats much more than me, and is normal weight. I have low activity, eat less than most people, and am overweight. Hopefully my kids won't get my genes.

If the government wants to help stop childhood obesity, they should start with the school lunches. They could offer a better variety and quality of food. Not just what is cheapest and easiest. Also not offering packaged items and drinks would help.
