Dr. Ian Smith created a television show for VH1 called Celebrity Fit Club, in which celebrities competed to lose weight, and along with the show created a diet called the fat smash diet. The diet relies on improving eating and exercise habits.

Ian Smith's resume prior to creating the fat smash diet is impressive. In addition to sitting on the board for the American Council on Exercise, he is a health consultant for well known television shows and a columnist for many health magazines. He also created the TV show that was centered around his fat smash diet.

There are four phases within the fat smash diet:

One detox: This is a nine day period on the fat smash diet during which the body and mind are purged of impurities, and during which Dr. Smith claims people can lose anywhere from 6 to 10 pounds. This phase includes some strange but ineffective suggestions such as weighing yourself in the nude and being photographed in a bathing suit.

Two the foundation: The smash diet uses this 21 day phase to re-introduce some of the foods removed during the detox phase. This is all based on controlling portions, such as eating 3 ounces of meat.

Three construction phase: This a 28 day or four-week phase and is a time during which the dieter creates an eating plan that incorporates foods they enjoy. Moderation is important when things like sweets and breads are added back to the diet.

Four Temple: This is the portion of the fat smash diet that lasts the rest of your life. The temple built in the first three phases must now be maintained through will power and control.

Fat smash diet has both good and bad aspects. The initial 6 to 10 pound weight loss is really due to severe calorie cutting which can be dangerous. Many experts find that nine day detox phase to be troubling. However the lessons of moderation and exercise proposed by the fat smash diet are good ones.
